A fitted sheet with elastic bands is a great idea to keep the sheets stretched neatly over a mattress. 

However, they can be quite a problem while folding because you don’t have right-angle edges that you can fold neatly into squares. Luckily, if you want to know how to fold a fitted sheet nicely, you’re in for a treat!

The first method is the most common one used by experts while folding a fitted sheet because they allow for a more compact fold, so you can store them easier without eating up space in your closet or sheets drawer. Here’s how to do it efficiently: 

Hold the sheets out with both of your hands so that the longer sides of the sheet are stretched out horizontally and you’re holding the sheets from two adjacent ends of one of the longer sides.

Put your hands inside each corresponding corner in a way that makes both ends facing inside out. You’ll be able to tell by noticing the visible seams sticking out of the corners as you do so.

Arrange the sheet so that the bottom half is facing outside of your body while the top half is facing towards you.

Put your hands together as if you’re doing a clap and make it so that your hands are stretched all the way and touching each other through the sheets and both seams are lined up perfectly.

Now, use one of your hands (let’s say the left one) to pinch on the other hands’ corner (the right-hand corner) and hold on to it.

Slowly release the right hand out while holding one to its side with the left one, then take the right-hand edge (where your hand is introduced), and wrap it over the other hand (just like you do when you combine two matching socks together).

Now put your right hand back inside the sheets and release your left hand so that it slides down the fold of the elastic band until it reaches the closest corner. Once your left hand finds a corner, hold on to it, and spread your two hands up and apart again. At that point, you should notice that you’ve already split the sheet in half.

Step 4: Repeat the Steps for the Folded Sheet

Now that you’re standing in the same position you’ve started with, you’ll repeat the process again for the two other corners. 

Put your hands together so that you’re matching the seams, pinch with the left hand, then wrap the right-hand edge over the left.

Step 5: Place the Folded Sheet on an Even Surface

You should now have a rectangular form with a noticeable “J” shaped angle on one of the corners of the sheet.

Lay that shape over a flat surface, whether it’s a bed or a table, flat out the wrinkles, and match the seams as much as possible.

Step 6: Fold the Rest of the Sheet into Itself

Divide the sheet arbitrarily with your eye into 3 equal vertical sections. Take the J-shaped edge of the sheet and fold it in towards the first section, then again to create a long perfect rectangle.

Now fold the rectangle vertically to create a neat and compact rectangle and you’re good to go!


Option 1: The J Method (Compact and Space-Efficient)

This method is fairly close to the first one, except that it cuts directly into the folding process without repeating the first few steps. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Hold the Sheet with Both Hands and Swap Corners

Put your hands inside the sheets and spread them out from the two adjacent ends of the long side, then flip the corners inside out.

By pinching each side, swap both your hands inside the corners so that each one of them is holding the opposite one.

With each one of your hands tucked inside the opposite corner of the sheet, put your hands together as if you’re clapping.

Pinch both sides with one hand and release the other hand from the sheets. Use the free hand to tuck the elastic band of one corner over the other while holding on the sheets by the pinching hand.

Slowly put back your free hand inside the pocket to hold on to the folded parts, and make the other hand travel down the elastic band to locate the nearest corner.

Step 4: Lay the Sheet on a Flat Surface and Adjust the Sheet’s U Shape

Once both of your hands are at a corner, spread out your two hands once again, then put the formed structure over a flat surface, like a table or a bed.

You’ll notice that the elastic band is now making a noticeable “U” shaped structure. Flatten the wrinkles on the sheet, and adjust it so that the seams are aligned together perfectly.

From the base of the U shape, whether you’ve laid it out right side up or upside down, start folding the rest of the sheet towards the other side.

As previously mentioned, the best way to achieve it is by dividing the sheet into 3 sections by eye. However, this time, you’ll arrange these sections horizontally (above each other).

After folding the sheets from the base towards the edges, you’ll be left with a horizontal rectangle.

Fold this rectangle once or twice depending on the size of the sheet to make it more compact, and your sheets should be ready for storage!
