Minecraft is a popular game with millions of copies sold worldwide. Kids and adults love this game because they can mine, craft, and build while interacting with others. However, when you’re connected to a public server, you won’t control who your child is interacting with. This is why learning how to make a Minecraft server can be essential. 

It’s easy to run Minecraft, as you can jump into the Minecraft Realms and start building your own world. However, if you want to experience the full Minecraft experience, you need to launch a special private server, so you can have total control of who interacts with you.

After setting up your server, you should be careful about who you’re sharing your IP address with. Setting up a private server won’t protect you or your child from intruders who might discuss inappropriate topics or threaten your child’s safety. 

To enjoy the best experience, you need to invite people that you actually know in real life. You must also pay attention to the age group your child is interacting with. 

To make sure that your server is running correctly, you must ensure that you have the latest Java version installed on your PC. Press the Win button, then X and Y. Under System Type, check whether you need to download the 32 or 64-bit version. 

If you already have Java, go to the Control Panel, and check Programs. Look for Java, and press Update Now to gain access to the latest version. 

Step 2: Choose a Location for Your Server Files

Download the .jar file from the Minecraft website and create a folder where you can run the server from. The folder name should have no spaces, and once you run the file, it will create multiple configuration files. Place the folder in your Programs or Desktop, so you can have easy access to it whenever you need to. 

The file should run for 3 to 5 seconds and then close on its own. If this doesn’t happen, close the program and try to re-run the file. If it doesn’t work, you need to restart the computer and start all over. 

Go to the folder you have created, and check the files that were automatically installed. Choose the “eula.txt” file and open it using an editor like Notepad. Change eula=false to eula=true to run the program successfully. Failing to do this step will prevent you from running the server. 

If you see an error message that states that you can’t save server properties, go back to the Minecraft server and right-click to run it as administrator. 

Step 5: Improve the Server’s Performance

This step is optional but will help you enjoy better performance of your Minecraft server. You can add a “.bat” file with several commands that change the amount of RAM dedicated to the server. 

Download a “.bat” file that matches your system information. Make sure to place it in the same folder where you placed the “.jar” files. Edit the “.bat” file and change the -Xms and -Xmx to something bigger as this will affect the amount of RAM dedicated to the server. 

Step 6: Enable Port Forwarding on Your Router

Port forwarding isn’t necessary if you’re hosting a server for players on your local network. You can invite players using your local IP address if they’re already on your home network. 

However, if you want to make your server accessible to players from all over the world, you need to enable port forwarding. You should note that port forwarding can be a security risk.

Type “cmd” and press enter, then type “ipconfig” and press enter to get into your router’s settings. Open the browser and type the default gateway in the address bar. In most cases, the password needed is “password.” 

Check the page that was opened on the browser and go to Advanced Settings. Make sure that you’re using Port Forwarding, not Port Triggering to avoid errors. The IP address should be the same as the IPv4. You can also ask Google about your IP address and copy-paste it to run the server. 

Once you have added the server name and IP address, it’s time to give it a try. Double click the Run.bat file, and the server should run automatically. 

If things don’t run smoothly, you can restart the computer and try to run it one more time. It’s common to see some error messages the first time you’re running the server. Check the status of your server by entering your IP address into the Minecraft Server Status Checker. 

A window will appear, and you should leave it open to allow players to connect to your server. The server window shows some vital information.

You can check how much memory your server is currently using in the Status panel.
