Succulents love light, however, it’s not exactly easy for them to get enough sunlight when they’re placed indoors. Out in the open, succulents need around 6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight per day depending on the type of the plant.

But when it comes to growing succulents inside the house, you should place your plants near a window that receives light throughout the whole day. You can also place your succulents close by the brightest window or brightest spot in your home or office.

If you’re dealing with newly planted succulents, it’s best if you gradually introduce them to full sun exposure, as opposed to suddenly putting them under direct sunlight where they’re at risk of being scorched.

Succulents really do enjoy direct sunlight, so you should make sure that all parts of the plant are getting equal love!

If you just leave your succulent sitting in the same position day after day, chances are that only one side is receiving adequate sunlight. This can cause the plant to grow leaning towards the sun.

To avoid leaning and help your succulents stand up straight, you’ll need to regularly rotate the plants so that all sides are getting about the same amount of light.

When you’re watering your succulents, stay away from spray bottles! Misting these plants can leave you to deal with moldy leaves and brittle roots.

Instead, you should water the soil directly and soak it until water comes out of the drainage holes (if your pot doesn’t have such holes, use your best judgment).

Alternatively, you can try placing the pots in a pan with water, allowing the soil to absorb water through the drainage holes. Remove the succulent pot from the pan once the surface of the soil becomes moist.

Be careful, over-watering can kill succulents, so you must let the soil dry between watering sessions.

4. Water Your Succulent According to Season

Much like us, succulents require different amounts of hydration throughout the seasons.

During the summer and spring, succulents are more active so they need more energy, and consequently, more water than the colder months of the fall and winter.

To get a better idea of the right time for watering, test the plant’s soil with a finger. As a rule of thumb, water your succulents when you find the top 1.25 inches of the finger dry.

As you can probably tell from the last 2 tips, a container with drainage goes a long way. Succulents don’t enjoy sitting in drenched soil, and so, drainage is pretty crucial to their healthy growth as they prevent rot.

For this reason, you should use plant containers featuring drainage holes that allow excess water to leave.

Over time, you should expect that your indoor succulents will end up with dust on their leaves. This can hinder the growth of your plants, make sure you schedule periodic cleaning sessions where you use a damp cloth to gently wipe off the leaves and spines. You can use a soft paintbrush to reach tricky spots.

Succulents require soil that drains, which means rules out the use of dirt from your yard or even regular potting soil. You want to choose cactus soil or a mixture of potting soil with perlite or sand.
