I have been refurbishing vintage sewing machines for over 25 years. There are many reasons why your sewing machine may not be functioning at it's prime. Simple fixes can be: oiling the machine, changing a needle or changing to a better thread. Recently, I had a client who couldn't get her machine working properly. She had even had it serviced and they never detected she had the wrong sized bobbin in the machine.
