Elden Ring is a fantasy world action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware, the studio behind the successful Dark Souls series. Thanks to the Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, it quickly surged to the top of numerous "most anticipated" lists when it was unveiled at E3 2019. Martin moved off to work on video games for a while instead of finishing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, much to the displeasure of book lovers everywhere. Elden Ring is yet another popular Soulsborne product from FromSoftware (which isn't a bad thing), but unlike the company's past efforts, this one incorporates a universe designed by George R.R. Martin. Since the game's setting was "made by" Miyazaki and Martin in the first video, it wasn't unreasonable to think they worked together on the story, which some anticipated would be full of Game of Thrones-style political intrigue, infighting, and backstabbing. After all, it was half the joy of the show. Miyazaki, on the other hand, did not commission Martin to write the story.

Martin spoke about his feelings on Miyazaki's original pitch on his blog. According to Martin, Miyazaki merely requested him to create the storyline and history for the then-upcoming game. In other words, Miyazaki wanted Martin to lay the groundwork for worldbuilding in the Elden Ring. Martin acknowledges he isn't a huge fan of video games (he's played Railroad Tycoon and Master of Orion, but nothing recent), but he was aware of FromSoftware and admired their work. As a result, "this offer was too fantastic to refuse," he says. He took Miyazaki's proposal, worked on Elden Ring's fictitious history, and then sent it to FromSoftware. That was the end of Martin's involvement, according to him. Because Martin developed the game's narrative and mythology, he composed major portions of a design document, which is a critical aspect of game development that contains a plot, characters, graphics, and game mechanics and is written during pre-production.

Is Elden Ring Dark Souls?

Demon's Souls spawned Dark Souls, which spawned Elden Ring. With 27 million units sold across three games as of 2020, FromSoftware has established itself as a genuine contender. One person responded by asking Musk what type of character he was playing in the game. Surprisingly, the Twitter founder responded in great detail. Musk stated that his main focus has been on developing a mage with weapon skills who excels in Intelligence and Dexterity. "Shield in the left hand, staff in right, rapier, and claws rapid swap," he explained of the character he's creating. "For a rapid roll or tank, switch from heavy to medium armor. Talismans should be moved about a lot. It's crucial to land many little hits in a sequence to build up damage."

FromSoftware is working on it, and George R R Martin is involved (author of song of ice and fire aka game of thrones). It's an indirect sequel to the souls/borne games, a game genre created by FromSoftware and known for being difficult. It's a misconception to term it "the Lord of the Rings TV program" because it lacks most of the characters from the books.

Is Elden Ring the hardest FromSoftware game?
