Tequila is a distilled spirit made from Agave Azul or Blue Agave. Despite being sold all around the world, tequila is produced in just five areas of Mexico. Tequila is a type of mezcal, which includes alcohols made from other types of agave plants. While tequila is mezcal, not all mezcals are tequila.

What Is Tequila?

Tequila is made by distilling fermented juices from the Weber blue agave plant, also known as Agave tequilana. After seven to ten years of growth, the blue agave plant is ready to be harvested for production into tequila. While the tequila is not made from the spiked barbs, there is actually a large bulb called that grows underground called a piña. From there, the bulb is baked in brick ovens or steam and is cooked until the starches convert to sugars. The baked bulb is crushed to extract juice which is then fermented with yeast to convert the sugar into alcohol.


What Is Tequila Made From?

There are five main types of tequila including Tequila Blanco, Tequila Reposado, Tequila Añejo, Tequila Joven, and Extra Añejo.

Tequila Blanco: Tequila Blanco, also known as silver tequila is distilled from the blue Weber agave. Blanco tequilas are typically paired with Margaritas and are from one of the five western states in Mexico.

Tequila Reposado: Tequila Reposado is one of the main types of tequila that is typically aged in European or American oak barrels ranging from two months to a year.

Tequila Añejo: Tequila Añejo is a type of tequila that is aged in European or American barrels for at least one year. This type of tequila may be used in Margaritas, but it's typically known for sipping neat like a nice whiskey.

Tequila Joven: Tequila Joven are Blanco bottles but typically contain aged and unaged tequilas.

Extra Añejo: Extra Añejo tequilas are aged for at least three years


Types of Tequila

Tequila is a very versatile type of alcohol that sipped in many ways. Tequila is commonly enjoyed as a shot, either straight up, or with salt and limes. Tequila is also made into a number of cocktails, ranging from elaborate cocktails to martini-like drinks. Aged tequilas are often sipped straight, both chilled or on the rocks.

What Mixes With Tequila?

Tequila typically has one of the lowest calories per shot of all of the alcohols. A 1.5 ounce shot on tequila typically will have 98 calories while a shot of vodka will have 106 calories.

How Many Calories Are in a Shot of Tequila?

Pure agave tequila is low in sugar. While wine typically has about 3-5 grams of sugar per bottle, tequila has less than one gram.
